Palm Treo 700w Reviews (Verizon)

Palm Treo 700w available through Verizon Wireless early next year.

Palm has licensed the Microsoft Windows Mobile operating system for an expanded line of Palm Treo smartphones, the first of which will be available on Verizon Wireless‘ national wireless broadband network. The news was revealed in a press conference with Ed Colligan, president and chief executive officer of Palm, Bill Gates, chairman and chief software architect of Microsoft and Denny Strigl, president and chief executive officer of Verizon Wireless.

The Palm Treo (700w) smartphone on Windows Mobile is a CDMA-based phone targeted for the U.S. market and takes advantage of Verizon Wireless’ BroadbandAccess service on its EV-DO network with download speeds averaging 400-700 kilobits per second. Today, about half the U.S. population, in more than 84 metropolitan areas and in hundreds of airports across the nation, can access download speeds comparable to DSL or cable-modem connections. Verizon Wireless has been expanding its BroadbandAccess service area steadily since its debut in the fall of 2003.

The new Palm Treo (700w) smartphone running Windows Mobile will highlight the speed and power of our BroadbandAccess service,” said Strigl. “The Palm Treo (700w) will deliver fast downloading of email and attachments as well as quick access to critical-business information, providing businesses with a great return on investment. Our strong relationships with Microsoft and Palm continue to provide real value for our customers.

The new Palm Treo (700w) smartphone is powered by an Intel processor and joins Palm’s award-winning family of Treo smartphones, which includes the Treo 600 and Treo 650, both offered today to Verizon Wireless customers.

The Palm Experience on Windows Mobile

During the press conference, the companies demonstrated the Palm experience now brought to life on Windows Mobile. The audience saw a sampling of Palm’s award-winning hardware design integrated thoughtfully with a rich Palm software suite, including the ability to:

  • Contact someone quickly from the Today Screen and choose between home, office or mobile numbers, or select email or SMS. With only two letters entered, a customer can find a record from among thousands of contacts
  • Reach people most often called via photo speed dials visible as a band of images on the Today Screen
  • Decline a call with a friendly SMS, signaling “In a meeting” or “Talking with the boss” instead of simply ignoring the call
  • Rewind, delete or fast-forward through work or cell phone voicemail with familiar and consistent on-screen icons.

Full product details will be disclosed when the product is available for purchase in early calendar 2006. No plans were revealed for additional mobile operators. Palm indicated that a Treo smartphone using Windows Mobile based on other wireless technologies was not anticipated to be released earlier than the second half of 2006. Verizon to Release Palm Treo 700W January 2006

Mobile Wireless News‘ notes that the Palm Treo 700w will be available in the New Year from Verizon Wireless.

Ed Colligan, CEO of Palm, stated in Monday’s earnings conference call that they will release three new Palm Treo smartphone handhelds during 2006 in addition to the release of the Palm Treo 700W smartphone based on Microsoft’s Window Mobile. The Palm Treo 700W will be exclusive to Verizon Wireless at time of release, with no indication of release for other provider’s networks. The palm Treo 700P (Palm OS Garnet) as well as two new models code-named “Hollywood” and “Lowrider” are expected to be released during the course of 2006.

MobileWhack‘ have an inkling that the Palm Treo 700w will be released on January 5th.

The Palm Treo 700w’s release date is rumored to be January 5th. If so, this would pretty much coincide with the CES event in Vegas – not surprising. Stay tuned for a review of the Palm Treo 700w. Hopefully Palm will send us a unit. If not, heck, I’m going out and getting one for myself!

Palm Treo 700w Reviews

Laptop Mag has reviewed the Palm Treo 700w and write this, about the 700w’s camera:

The newer Treo sports a 1.3-megapixel camera, which in our tests took slightly sharper pictures than the 650’s VGA camera. Those pictures would look better on the 650, however, because it boasts a brighter and higher-resolution (320 x 320 pixels) display.

Treonauts‘ compares the camera of the Treo 650 with its successor the Palm Treo 700w.

Palm Treo 700w camera is much better at picking up the different hues of the leafs and provides a slightly ‘cleaner’ image… Treo 650 camera actually appears to be noticeably better in the colour saturation… when it comes to outdoor pictures the Palm Treo 700w delivers images with considerably better contrasts and light compared to the subdued ones in our Treo 650…

The guys at ‘Justaboutit‘ have got their hands on a Palm Treo 700w, they’ve not really had much time to write a review, but they have published quite a few pics.

‘Mobile Whack’ have got hold of a Palm Treo 700w, here’s a little from their review.

I’ve been using the phone for over two weeks now and have been relatively pleased with its operations though it does have its quirks. If you plan to use it for mostly phone related tasks and keeping in sync with your calendar and email, then the Palm Treo 700w does a good job at handling these tasks. If you’re more a PDA person – meaning you’ll use the device for everything from managing your expenses to watching videos to using it for GPS purposes, then the Palm Treo 700w might be a bit underpowered and under whelming.

How much will the Palm Treo 700w cost?

DevLib‘ have an inkling that Verizon will offer the Palm Treo 700w for $500 U.S. with a two year contract.

According to rumors spotted on various forums, the Palm Treo 700w will be available for around US$ 500 for a two year contract from Verizon. The price for a Palm Treo 700w without a contract is reported to be US$ 600-650.

The pricing is reportedly higher because of EV-DO support, which will allow the Palm Treo 700w to access high speed networks at 400-700kbps speeds.
